That is an excellent idea. If one has the capabilities or can get someone to set the Google Apps for Domains up, then it's a definite option.

A few reasons why I said "uniquedomain@gmail.com" is a great idea. First off, Gmail is a superior email program and generally, those with Gmail accounts demonstrate some online savviness. Gmail is amazing for threading emails and for blocking spam. If the Gmail user never sets up the Google Apps for Domains and continues with the @gmail, the user will always be in good hands as Google regulates the spam and provides gobs of free space.

The second reason why it's important to get "uniquedomain@gmail.com" is because that "uniquedomain" becomes your username for all-things-Google. The "uniquedomain" as an email address will become a place holder for Google's other programs. For instance, if you choose to use Google's Analytics, AdSense, Voice, Wave, and Web Master Tools, you can login to each account with the same username.

In the end, you would not want someone else to own "pepsi@gmail.com" unless you were the owner or marketing team of Pepsi Cola Products (even though you use info@pepsi.com). So do yourself a favor and snag your "uniquedomain" address at Gmail before it gets taken.

Why setup the gmail account when you can just setup Google Apps for Domains and use your own domain for Gmail? Receiving an email from @yourdomain.com is far more pro than receiving an email from yourdomain@gmail.com
